2021 NFL Draft: Trey Lance
Trey Lance, North Dakota State, QB • 6'4", 226 lbs
When scouting athletic prospects you look at the attributes they possess that will check all of the required boxes. When you look at Trey Lance he seems to check them all; super athletic, instinctual, natural runner, big arm, physicality, size, speed and intelligence. The one box left unchecked is experience (only 17 starts), leaving some to believe he is still a work in progress. But the long list of checked boxes have many teams excitedly considering him as a top 10 selection in the 2021 NFL draft.
Lance was not heavily recruited out of high school where he played both quarterback and safety. Without a wide array of options to chose from he chose to attend North Dakota State. Lance redshirted his freshman year (2018). The following season he was a starter for the Bisons, throwing for 2,786 yards, 28 touchdowns on 66.9 percent completion. Additionally, Lance proved to be a dual-threat, rushing for 1,100 yards with 14 rushing touchdowns.
The level of competition the Bison’s faced in the FCS could be another reason to pump the breaks on this young quarterback; but there’s little doubt that Lance has all the tools to become an eventual superstar at the NFL level.
